Valeria Macchia, Edinburgh, Winter 2014/ Spring 2015
My internship as Education Resource Development in The River Forth Fisheries Trust has been a very rewarding experience. My duties included to develop a more integrated education programme which covered all school ages from P1 to S6 and a wider range of subjects related to the water environment, including, life cycle of fish (salmon and trout in particular) and other freshwater bodies together with interlinks to the Curriculum for Excellence at each stage. I have acquired a great amount of knowledge of the existing education tools used by the Forth Fisheries Trust as well as Non-Government Organisations (such as the Water of Leith Conservation Centre, Edinburgh). I have developed my research skills and analyzed data and linkages to develop a practical outcome. Moreover I had experience of alternative publication methods for distribution of the completed work that included web publishing.
The internship was a truly enriching experience. Aside from improving my professional skills I also developed my interpersonal skills, working and interacting with individuals from many different background as well as learning from my colleagues that have a vast knowledge in environmental management strategies, which is one of the areas of study that I would like to undertake in my future studies.
